About Us

Our Mission

Giant Steps is a therapeutic day school focused on educating children with autism spectrum disorders. Our programs aim to develop academic, social, and vocational skills, helping each student reach their full potential.

Autism is a complex neurobehavioral disorder that can significantly impact language development, communication, sensory processing, and emotional regulation. These challenges can hinder learning, relationships, and daily functioning in typical environments, especially when support is limited. The primary goal for students attending Giant Steps is to equip them with the skills necessary to become independent and successful in their everyday lives.

Our History

In 1994, the founder of Giant Steps, based in Montreal, Canada, expanded her successful program to Missouri. A group of parents of children with autism advocated for funding from the Missouri legislature. As a result, the legislature agreed to finance a pilot program in collaboration with the Department of Mental Health and the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, with oversight from the University of Missouri, St. Louis. Within six months, Giant Steps of St. Louis opened its doors, serving twelve students with dedicated therapists and teachers. The program's philosophy focuses on providing individualized education in a sensory-friendly environment, maintaining a low student-to-teacher ratio. This approach addresses the academic, social, vocational, and behavioral needs of children with autism who encounter challenges in traditional educational settings.
